I have only very recently discovered the Ringing Cedars phenomenon for myself.  For several years now I have been aware of these books and the massive impact they have made (over 10 million copies of the first book sold in 20 languages), but somehow, every time I picked up one of the books in a bookstore, I always put it down after only a cursory examination and moved onto other publications.  I think the main reason for my reticence was, what I considered to be, the rather childish and “tacky” cover illustrations by Leonid Sharashkin of the original print runs of this series.  However, the cover designs of later print runs were, to my mind, far more attractive and conveyed a vastly improved, more professional image.  On the other hand, perhaps I just wasn’t ready for the messages conveyed by Anastasia before now?

What to make of this book?  I can safely say that I’ve never read anything quite like it before!  My rational, analytical mind keeps questioning whether the book could possibly be a factual account.  Did Vladimir Megré really meet a young woman called Anastasia whilst on a trade expedition in Siberia?  Has Anastasia really lived her entire life in the forests of Siberia without warm clothes or shelter, living only on fruits, nuts and berries brought to her by the forest animals, with whom she lives in complete harmony?  Is she really able to speak all languages, explore the Universe at will using her “ray”, alter reality to suit her desires and perform all the incredible feats, as described by Megré in his book?  Could this be a fantastic story fabricated by Megré in order to make money out of spiritual concepts?  After all, the idea of a gorgeous, semi-nude young blonde woman presenting these concepts is FAR more glamorous and appealing than if they were simply offered in a “normal” spiritual book form by an ordinary Russian author!  I have to wonder where all the truly novel and very exciting ideas expressed in this book really originate.

Despite my reservations about the veracity of the story, many of the concepts and ideas presented in this book strike a cord of resonance in my soul and make my heart sing.  Upon completion of the book I felt joyful and uplifted and full of positive energy and intent.  Although I don’t agree with all the ideas presented (for example, Anastasia’s assertion that sex for any purpose other than procreation is a sin!), there is something rather magical and exciting about the book and I feel happier and more purposeful after reading it.

And, at the end of the day, what better reason could there possibly be for reading anything?

The only Kai-zing improvement I can suggest is that we can save a lot of precious resources by using e-books rather than paper books. Paper means trees - and harvesting trees is not very eco-friendly. Then there is the industrial process of making paper which releases a lot of toxic muck into the environment. Finally getting this book to means transportation and all the associated pollution. That said it IS just nicer to hold a book in your hand, isn't it? I love books. So... it's a trade off. But offering an e-book version is good for those of us that will use that format. I am disappointed therefore that I haven't been able to find an e-book version of this book yet.
